Thus, there are two types of diabetes 1 (insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, IDDM) or type 2 (non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, NIDDM); To these two, which are the most common, are added the existence of others, such as gestational diabetes and diabetes secondary to other diseases. In the case of type 1 diabetes, the pancreas does not produce insulin, so the symptoms begin to manifest very soon, in children or young people, which makes it necessary to replace this hormone for life. In type 2 diabetes the pancreas does produce insulin, but in insufficient quantity or does not work properly so the cells do not react properly. Type 2 diabetes is by far the most common (around 90% of cases), and is the most susceptible to prevention actions. Advanced age, obesity, presence of family history of diabetes, sedentary lifestyle, impaired glucose tolerance, high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia are risk factors that are associated with the development of this disease. Most cases of type 2 diabetes mellitus occur accompanied by a metabolic syndrome (in which diabetes, high blood pressure, increased levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and / or uric acid and overweight are associated). Metabolic syndrome increases cardiovascular risk and is a leading cause of death in developed countries. But the reality is that the figures are conclusive, diabetes mellitus affects more than 366 million people in the world, it is the leading cause of blindness, renal replacement treatment (dialysis / transplant) and non-traumatic amputation in Western countries; and is associated with cardiovascular diseases as the leading cause of death (Diabetes Strategy of the National Health System). So if we define diabetes as something more complex we can say that it is a highly prevalent, chronic and very complex pathology, which generates a large number of human responses that can alter basic needs and deteriorate the quality of life of the individual, thus limiting their autonomy. Forecasts for the coming decades due to the global increase in obesity, and sedentary living calculate pandemic proportions of DM 2. By 2030, one in 10 adults is expected to have diabetes.
